What's in a name?

Skylar was whelped and raised here in our Litter S, (Benelli x Jack). Her temporary "S" litter name was "Skylar" and we really liked it so we kept it.

She is a 3rd generation pup from of our H.O.P.E line. We bred her great-grand-dam "Duchess of Adena" to TV Hank's son "Sillman's Hank Boy" (aka Hank Jr),  she is the daughter of Benelli, grand-daughter of HOPE, thus keeping that bloodline alive.

In honor of Splash, our foundation stud and logo mascot, she is the first pup in our new Llew Crew "S" name lineup, along with our later pups, Shayla, Sawyer, Shelby, Steele and Savanna.

DNA / Health Screening

DNA Parentage - American Field/UC Davis

Result = VIP Blue and Gold Seal
DNA #: AFP2239

Skylar has been DNA tested to prove Llewellin parentage by the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Her certificate displays the Blue and Gold seal signifying "VIP" (Verifiable Identified Parentage) confirming both the sire and dam of the dog to be as stated in the pedigree, and confirming that she is a purebred Llewellin Setter.

DNA Analysis - Embark

Genetic Disease Results:  At Risk = 0, Carrier 0
Inbreeding Coefficient = 21%
Test Date: 01/08/19

Skylar's DNA sample was submitted to Embark for an all-inclusive genetic health test consisting of inbreeding coefficient and results for nearly all genetic mutation tests covering 165 diseases on over 200,000 genetic markers in 16 different areas (see more).

Hips - OFA

Result = GOOD
OFA #: Prelims
Exam Date: 9/7/2018
Norberg Angle: R102Ā°, L102Ā° (GOOD range 100Ā°-104Ā°)
Percent Coverage: R61.5%, L64.1%

Skylar had a preliminary evaluation of her hips done at 17 months and based upon the radiograph submitted to the OFA, the consensus was that no evidence of hip dysplasia was recognized and that hip joint conformation was GOOD. With OFA prelims, since the dog was less than 24 months old at the time the images were taken, only one veterinarian will evaluate the x-rays instead of three and she will be given a rating but will not be assigned an OFA #.

Eyes - OFA CAER

Result =  NORMAL
CAER #: LS-EYE2/21F-VPI
Exam Date:  1/17/19

Skylar has had her eyes examined by a veterinary opthalmologist who is a member of the American College of Veterinary Opthamologists (ACVO). Both eyes were determined to be NORMAL. Paperwork has been sent to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) for registration in the Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER).

Thyroid Function - OFA

Result = NORMAL  [T4=5 (range 0-20), T3=0 (range 0-10)]
OFA #: LS-TH2/17F-VPI

Skylar had blood drawn which was sent overnight to Michigan State University's Veteriary Diagnostic Lab for evaluation. Results were sent to OFA for certification.

Hunting Style

Skylar is an extremely energetic Llewellin, she's fast and furious with a strong prey drive. She has a powerful spring in her stride with amazing acceleration all the while holding a high and lively tail.

Temperament

While Skylar has been raised in our home, she lives to be outdoors.  She wants to be outside hunting and pointing critters and most of all stalking that pesky squirrel that lives in the hickory tree out back.

Inside, she is a cuddly and affectionate girl, always wanting to snuggle into you and bury her head in your lap.  She is happy when she's being gently rubbed and paws at you to continue if you stop before she's ready.  She also has a very talkative and interactive personality. She really responds to the tone of your voice and "talks back" to you when provoked.

Some words to describe her would be:
    Playful, talkative, interactive, silly, mischievous, affectionate, snuggly, energetic, agile, light on her feet, strong prey drive, fast and furious.

Conformation

Size: Above average size for a female, around 53 pounds. She's tall and slender, standing about 23-1/4 inches at the withers.

Coat: Soft and silky, slightly wavy

Coat & Nose Color Genotype: EE, bb, ky/ky  (Chestnut Tricolor/Brown nose) Hidden: none

Tail:  She carries her tail straight, but has a slight curve when on point.

Feet: Traditional spoon shaped paw

Markings

Skylar is a Tri-Chestnut Llewellin (White/Chestnut/Tan). Her body is predominantly white with a moderate amount of chestnut ticking. Her right ear is chestnut and her left ear is heavily ticked making it also appear chestnut. She's also got a chestnut section on her tail. Since she is tri-color she also has tan points (meaning orange ticking on legs, and face).

Bull was a great grouse dog of tremendous stamina and will to find birds coupled with a superior nose and intellect. Bull made birds. He became a grouse dog with such desire and drive he was a handful. One thing only on his mind, "Find another grouse!". From his humble beginnings as a dog hunting too close, he emerged as a great one few men ever witness. Grouse dogs are at the very top of the realm of birddog excellence and he was at the top of this loyal order.
